Forbidden Kingdom

I have now seen this movie. I went with [livejournal.com profile] emilytheslayer, [livejournal.com profile] mebib and [livejournal.com profile] ryan4d2.

Ephemeral bits first: I haven't been to the movies in quite awhile, apparently. I was somewhat surprised to see 2 tickets cost $19.50. I was expecting $16 or $17. We also had a medium popcorn and 2 medium soaps, I mean sodas and that came to another $16.

There was a trailer for Get Smart playing in the lobby and I must say it looks like they've done a good job.

At least 90% of the ads shown before the movie (and I still hate that they show ads) were for Lexus. I can avoid buying one of those no problem. However, considering the cost of the movie, maybe only Lexus buyers can afford to go regularly these days.

Now for the good bit. There may be things included that might be considered spoilers, but I don't think they really are.

The movie ROCKED! The fight scenes were amazing, the script was funny, the scenery and cinematography was gorgeous! Jackie Chan is so graceful and funny, what's not to like. Jet Li was surprisingly funny and the two of them had a real chemistry. Their "we meet, fight and team-up" sequence was phenomenal. A tension remains between the two characters that doesn't often in this kind of storyline, but should. The white kid who brings the staff was mocked, abused, made fun of and while he does his part, he doesn't become amazing. I liked that.

The movie follows the established pattern for this kind of movie, but that shouldn't be a surprise. It manages to surpass its genre while still being an homage to old movies of its genre.

I'd see it again and again, it was better than Cats. And I'm not just saying that, it is true!

They sell soap at theaters now? Do they expect us to clean the sticky floors ourselves? Man, the movies have gone downhill...

[identity profile] lynxreign.livejournal.com 2008-05-02 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
No, they sell it to drink.

Yum! :)

You hate that they show ads before movies? lol I LOVE the ads! I'm sad if I miss the ads. :)

You... love the ... ads.
The ads.
Not the previews for other movies, I dislike missing those as well. The ads, like for cars and phones and bean paste and such.

[identity profile] urnesha.livejournal.com 2008-05-02 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
oh! I'd forgotten that they show product ads. I thought you were talking about the previews. I don't like most of the ads... though some can be funny. There's a Heineken one that I like that they show often at the cinema in Trinidad that I go to. Hmm.. that's an awkwardly worded sentence. lol But yeah, not so big on the ads.

Oh good. I thought I was going to have to have an emergency psychiatrist come to your place.

This is what's stopping you? Really?

We saw it last weekend -- I really liked it and I'm considering letting Sabrina watch it too.

I'd say it is a fine movie for kids as long as they're ok with mild violence.

[identity profile] wizardru.livejournal.com 2008-05-02 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, so they didn't screw it up! Good.

Now to figure out if we can sneak this in sometime soon. So many movies arriving now, it'll be hard. Tomorrow is Iron Man, but it looks like just for me and [livejournal.com profile] wingblaze and [livejournal.com profile] gm_scorch, since [livejournal.com profile] komochiko is taking the kids to see it right now (due to an in-service half-day).

Nut bunnies.

I can tell you what the bad parts are if you don't mind mildly spoilery parts, but there's no excessive blood and only one part that's creepy/icky on screen instead of implied. And there's only one other thing I can think of that a parent might mind, but it'd ruin a joke if I told you, so I won't say unless you ask.

[identity profile] wizardru.livejournal.com 2008-05-02 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not too concerned. The kids have seen some pretty icky stuff occasionally and are pretty mature with that sort of thing. I've been worried in the past, but they've seen some unpleasant stuff and been OK with it. We've built them up gradually to it, I suppose.

Wonderful, just as a parent is supposed to do. Preparing your kids for adulthood, what'll they think of next. : -)

I dunno, when I let them stay up till midnight and watch "The Ring" they didn't handle it very well. I had to slip vodka into chocolate milk just to get them to sleep afterwards.

Ok, actually the scariest thing they've seen was, get ready for it..., "Clash of the Titans". Hey, that Medusa is really freaky. Harryhausen could really put some scary clay on the screen. We had to fast forward over most of Medusa.

The scariest thing that she sat through was "Curse of the Were-Rabbit". I didn't think it would be a problem but apparently suspenseful music gets to her. We almost had to leave the theater.

I saw it yesterday. Super-fun! I do love Jackie Chan so, so much. ;)
