1-5PM: Have Fun

Yep, that's what we were instructed to do today at yesterday's meeting. From 1-5 we'll be going to a "party" witha free lunch and faux gambling. There'll be prizes raffled off and the grand prize evidently goes to whomever gathers the most fake money gambling. I'm thinking of setting up a faux loan-sharking business to gather in the fake $. Attendance is madatory. Mandatory Fun! Wheee!

I can almost see them doing this for/to the employees, but you're a contractor! Are you sure you have to participate? Just tell them "look, I'm gonna go home and do stuff, and then you don't have to pay me for this. Fun isn't in my contract"

Hmm. A huge section of my workplace are contract workers, myself included but 'employee' events include us automatically. But we don't get paid on an hourly basis so I suppose that makes the difference.

I didn't reply to the initial EMail invitation, figuring I'm a contractor and wasn't invited. The organizer came to my cube and asked if I was going. I said "I'm a contractor, I didn't think I was invited."
She said "Oh, no. We made sure to invite you."
I said "Well, it is from 1-5, business hours you know. I have to work"
She said "No, no, this is paid time."
I said "Well... I um... I... ok, I'll be there."

That's a little creepy, I'd assume the worst and run away. "On no, we made sure to invite you. . .to your DOOM!"

It seems to mean alot to my boss that we all go and I feel a little sorry for him. There are 3 or 4 people here I kind of like and they're all looking forward to me attending too. They figure if I'm there it won't be utterly horrible. So I'll go and if it is to be my DOOM, then I'll fight my way out. It is what heroes do.

We had the faux-gambling at our company holiday party this year, it was fun! I learned how to play craps (well, kinda-sorta), and also learned which of my coworkers is a card shark.
