Funny Story
Mar. 2nd, 2009 10:49 amYou may have noticed it snowed a bit. My first day on the new job was supposed to start at 10 AM, so I got up at 8, left the house at 8:30 to have time to clean the car and get to Riverside by 9. I figured the trip to Copley from Riversde normally takes 40 minutes, so I'd give myself an extra cushion. I'd actually planned to catch the 8:50 train, but the roads were pretty bad. I did catch the 9:00 train and the green line had no delay. As the train was leaving the stop before Kenmore, the one just before the train enters the tunnel, it was 9:30ish. I got a call from my agency.
Snow day. She'd just gotten the email though she'd been checking all morning.
So I switched trains at Kenmore and went back to Riverside. I'm looking at is as a rather wet dry-run. Now I'm home and wondering if I should go to the gym today. I joined a gym on Saturday with
emilytheslayer,
rayan4d2 and
ioianthe. The sign-up story will be in another post.

We just had a fire in our kitchen here at work. Someone apparently stored their store-bought cupcakes in the over, plastic container and all. Someone else went in and turned on the over to warm it up to cook a lasagna. Hilarity ensued. The plastic melted and caught fire, there's smoke everywhere. My cube is unfortunately in the smokey area. Now the windows and doors are open and there's a fan right outside my office. I'm cold.
On the other side of the wall that the stove is on? Our servers. Genius placement.
Though the fire was put out promptly the fire department still showed up.
When I was a kid I had a toy that was essentially plastic girders and a heating element and you would melt the girders and stick them together to build things. That is what the office smells like now.
Anyone else have that toy? That could not have been good for my lungs when I was a kid...

I've worked for well over 60 companies. I've been a consultant for over 15 years. I've worked for companies in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Massachusetts, and Washington.
It wasn't until moving back to MA that I've worked for companies that have "pie days". This is the second company in a year that has given free pie to the employees for no apparent reason.
I approve.

New House Plan
Sep. 10th, 2008 09:24 amWhen I moved to MA, the plan was simple: buy a house at some point. Sooner was better than later and with
aliwings and
head58 was better than without.
Between the crappy housing market putting the kaibosh on part of the plan and the rest of the "plan" driving me a little nuts, I decided to come up with an actual, though still quite flexible, plan.
Since
emilytheslayer graduates in the spring and will then be looking for a job, it doesn't make a ton of sense to move before she gets a job. Not that the job's location will be the largest determnier in where we move, but it would be nice to know before we go.
After that we'll likely move to a larger apartment with Washing Machine, Dishwasher and perhaps Central Air. Certainly the Larger aspect is important. I think I'd prefer something townhouse-like rather than another garden apartment.
We'll also look at foreclosed houses at the same time and if we find something good and inexpensive, we'll buy that. As I don't think this is likely, we'll go the renting route.
If we end up renting, I figure we'll rent for a few years while I continue to save and pay off debt. My car and personal loan are all paid off in 2011. My credit card debt shouldn't last much longer than that. If we do wait to 2011 or 2012 I might even be able to put together a decent down payment.
And if the market gets better, I'd still love to get a 2 family with the aforemetnioned
aliwings and
head58.
So still flexible, but not as urgent and a little more coherant. This should quiet my anxieties nicely.

Before I get too involved in describing the problem I'm having, let me ask if anyone out there might know what I'm talking about.
I'm attempting to enable PHP under IIS.
When I try to run my (prewritten) php page, I get an error of
I may be setting up the Internet Guest Account improperly. It is pretty clearly a permissions problem, but I'm not sure what I need to do.
Before I go describing this in more detail, does anyone think they can help?

Vaudeville, why did you leave?! Why!!
Jul. 8th, 2008 02:57 pmPart of the questions the woman next to me asks people in the aforementioned calls are general ability questions. One of them is "Do you have any trouble hearing?" Every time I hear her say that I respond in my head with "What? WHAT?!?" Every. Single. Time!
Sometimes, to vary the response, I hear it as Pee Wee Herman responding.
Sometimes I hear it as
emmalyon imitating Pee Wee Herman.

Two Technical Questions
Jun. 23rd, 2008 02:58 pm1) Would any of you be interested in a part time position (maybe full time) as a help desk person? You'd primarily be screening calls for the support team where I work. You'd likely also get to learn quite a bit. If you personally wouldn't be interested, do any of you know a student that'd like this job as a sumer job?
2) I've only created wikis on public systems that do the hosting and creation for you. Do any of you know how to set up a wiki on your own server? How hard is it? Do you have a resource that'd show me how to do it? What does it cost and what hardware would I need?
Thanks!

Better than most
Jun. 15th, 2008 10:56 amI had my first day of work this past Friday. It went better than most jobs. They had a cube and computer ready for me. They got me an ID badge, login ID, phone and most of the software I'll need on the first day. This coming week I'll get to find out what the program is currently like and what they want to do to change it. The week after I go to Origins. When I come back I start fixing things. Should be fun.
Ah, Friday!
May. 23rd, 2008 09:03 amHere I am at my last day on this job. The economy isn't great, but I have some leads on new jobs. I'm hoping my time between jobs isn't more than a month. We'll see. I'll probably apply for unemployment on Tuesday, or at least find out how long I have to be out of work before I can apply.
Seven more hours here and I'll be able to put this whole unpleasant experience behind me. I'm looking forward to having a little time off. I'm going to use the time to work on some programming: teaching myself new languages, working on my own projects, doing some for other people and boning up on OOP. I'm also going to continue going through my crap. I've another box or two of things I think I can get rid of and some shelving I can either give away or sell. I've already put my pinball machine on Craig's List and that's where the dvd/cd shelves would go too.
Unless someone reading this wants them? Anyone want dvd/cd shelves from Ikea?

Not with a bang, but a whimper
May. 22nd, 2008 01:34 pmAt least I hope that's how this job is ending.
I was all set for arguments and drama today with the last bits of projects I was working on giving me trouble, as they have the entire time I've been here. I may make a post later on that gathers all my complaints about this place, sort of a way to bury it all. There was an error in something I'd vetted and I thought there'd be complaints, instead they just assigned it to someone else and told me not to work on it any more.
I had one last thing to do, but it was an asp.net project and I don't have much experience with those. I was encountering problems with getting it to load in the editor because it was done in VS2003 with .Net 1.1 and I also have VS2005 with .Net 2.0 loaded and this can cause problems. I worked on troubleshooting it, but while I'd resolved several problems, more kept cropping up. I sent an email detailing this and asking if they wanted me to try to upgrade it and mentioning that I wasn't sure what kind of problems I'd encounter. I've heard nothing. No response at all. I sent the email almost 3 hours ago.
I think they're content at this point to just let me ride out the last few hours. I've around 10 hours left here and then I can put it behind me.
Wish me luck.

That's all she wrote
May. 15th, 2008 08:12 amI got a call from my agency last night at 9:15. That's not usually good news, but she sounded fine, so I called her back and left a message. This morning, she called again as we were waiting for the train. This job ends next Friday.
My agent really could have started the call with "I have some good news and some bad news. Your job ends next Friday" and left it at that. I'm happier about work today than I've been in months. Funny, no? Now I redouble my efforts at finding a new job. Now I don't have to be sneaky about calling agencies at work. Now I don't have to explain why I'm looking for a job to the agencies I call. Plus all the stress I've felt here ends. Will I have "finding a job stress"? Yes, but I had that already. I'll have a little money stress, but I'm going to look into applying for unemployment and that should help a lot.
Them giving me a week and 2 days notice instead of the traditional 2 weeks is a good example of how poorly managed this place is and I won't be sorry to see the last of it.
Wish me luck finding something new!
