So, I heard Jon Stewart sucked. I heard the whole thing was bland and boring and all the wrong movies won. Is this true? I couldn't be bothered to watch it myself, only tuning in for Charleeze Theron's extra-dress-on-her-shoulder and lots of plush penguins. Honestly, that and Dustin Hoffman's stoned performance are all I saw. That and Mr. Stewart looking like he was thinking "Is it over yet?" with his Desperate Housewives crack.
A sports commentator made the suggestion, and I like it, that instead of traditional oscars we change the selection process to a playoff format. I like the idea. They can be seeded by nominating vote strength. You can do an award show every few days that only takes an hour and drag it out for 3 or 4 weeks! And it'd still be more interesting!

Date: 2006-03-06 04:17 pm (UTC)Stewart did well, in my opinion. The audience, however, didn't warm to him until later in the show. He had some great one-liners and was clearly trying to behave. Part of the issue is that Stewart works best reacting off of an audience, and the nominees were being very sedate. There were no really awkward moments though, short of the Lauren Bacall thing. Ben Stiller's moment was pretty funny, I thought. George Clooney's acceptance speech was a good one. Some of the show felt very rote, though, and they were very inconsistent, IMHO, in speech length modulation. Nick Park's acceptance speech with the bowties was funny, too.
I thought the french filmmakers accepting for "March of the Penguins" were hard to understand...until the rap group accepting for best song got on stage. Yikes.
