Oh for the days of the Greek gods! They didn't imbue their followers with crazed infallibility. They didn't decree eternal rights and wrongs. They simply took human form and humped their brains out.

and

Scientology? You could devise a better religion spending an afternoon with a small block of hash and an 8-track of Frank Zappa's 'Apostrophe'.

I thought that *was* how Scientology was formed?!?!

Nah, it predated Zappa. It was formed as the result of a bet between 2 SF writers in the 1950s.

ain't that so sad? Poor Katie Holme's gonna be sucking on some adult-sized pacifier while she gets her child silently ripped from her body, all in the name of some science fiction writer's overactive imagination... lovely.

(though of course, I still think she's under contract, and as such is getting paid a pretty penny for such abuse, but still...)

Well, an overactive imagination started it. And the bet was essentially that people were gullible enough to believe anything proffered as religion. When he realized he could make billions at it, I think is when it really became a problem.

I think she's under contract too, which provides a corallary to the original bet. People will do just about anything for $.

Speaking of which, I saw a Law and Order ep the other day from a few years ago which used this as a premise. HI-larious.

That actually might make me religious.

On my list of things to do, a list which is entirely too long for the rate at which I get things done and the number of hours since the beginning of time, there is an entry: write a book on how to design a religion.
