Roxbury has a website!
[livejournal.com profile] whiskeyjack posted about the Hercules plant explosions and I googled it to see if I could find anything more. I found a whole site devoted to Roxbury history. The 1912 page is quite amusing.

I wish they had a map from 1912. The only bit of the canal that I know about is in Flanders. It's that strip of water that crosses Hillside near the church. I remember it most because geese used to waddle out of it and block the road.

I love that bit on the history page where the guy is talking about there being farms in Roxbury in 1942. As though that's the last time there were farms there. There was still a huge horse farm on Eyland right through the 1980s!

As for maps This is one of the entire canal (http://www.canalsocietynj.org/Mcanal_map.htm) There might be more on the rest of the site (http://www.canalsocietynj.org)

Searching on Morris Canal brings up a bunch of sites.

According to that map, the bit of water I'm thinking of was not part of the canal. Now I just have to remember who told me that so I can yell at them.

LOL, good luck in the yelling. Perhaps it was an auxillary portion? Or a boatyard for repairs?
