Should I sell mine? All of them or just some? I do have that Phil Foglio land game around somewhere that requires Magic Land cards and I probably couldn't sell those anyway.

I've been keeping them on the theory that we may all want to play again some day and that I wouldn't get much for them anyway.

Depends, do you play? And do you want to gamble on their value in the future?
If No and No, then sell them all.
If Yes and Yes, keep them all.
If No and Yes, keep them all
If Yes and No, sell the ones you don't play with anymore.

It is no and no, with a caveat to the first no. I'm keeping them because we might want to play them in the future.

What is it with you and the hoarding thing? Is that the latest trendy diagnosis?

Depends on how many you have, what conditions and which ones.

In general, the magic 'market' crashed several years ago, so don't expect to make a huge amount off of them. Certain cards are highly sought after, but most are not. I've been planning on selling off our collection for some time, but it's a hassle to inventory and categorize thousands of different cards for the purpose of shopping them around. Suppose we'll have to do it sooner or later, though.

Date: 2006-01-11 06:21 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lynxreign.livejournal.com
Apparently some cards on EBay are still going for hundreds of dollars.
Most of my cards are in great condition as most haven't been used and have been in card boxes since I got them.
I have lots from second edition and Arabian Nights through around 1995.

From: [identity profile] wizardru.livejournal.com
Few actually sell, though. Most of e-bays lots are filled with large batches in the thousands of cards...and the only ones of any real value are the rares. I see some auctions of lots going as high as $2000...but I see a lot more than aren't selling at ALL.

We have a collection that goes back all the way to the first printing of Alpha in 1993...so we really ought to inventory them.

Date: 2006-01-11 07:15 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lynxreign.livejournal.com
Are you trying to discourage me from doing it? Is your vote to keep them? I have no interest in selling them if I don't get a worthwhile amount from it.

What are magic cards?

Date: 2006-01-11 06:34 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] telepresence.livejournal.com
Cards for a game called "Magic: The Gathering", which was huuuge for a while and spawned a whole market for collectable card games (think Pokemon). For a while you could sell Magic cards for fairly ridiculous money, I financed my first apartment from the sales of some of my Magic cards. Magic card sales and trading also kept a lot of comic book and hobby stores afloat for a while. And it led to a lot of little kids being ripped off by speculators. And then the bubble burst market crashed horribly.

The actual card game was pretty fun at first, but slowly over time as more and more cards got released and the rules got more and more complex, and the dedicated players got more and more specialized and cutthroat, my enjoyment diminished greatly. I haven't played in years, and got rid of my last cards about a year ago.

Wow. You geeks gamers can be harsh! :) Never heard of it but I've never been much of a gamer so that's not surprising. Also anything beyond Clue, Pictionary and Scrabble is way expensive in Trinidad so we don't actually play a wide variety of board games here. I'll change that when I start my board game club. ;)

I don't know what it is, but when I moved all my boardgames were unpacked and put on shelves and accounted for, but my CCG's were just shoved in a corner and forgotten. Even the most unplayable boardgame ranks higher than most of the CCG's I have in those cases. And I do have tons and tons of them. I won't sell them. But you knew that already...

Magic: What other game can you say "I'm gonna twiddle my spitting slug" and not mean something naughty?

If you actually WANT to play them, then keep them. If you have lost interest, THAT would be the reason to get rid of them.

PS...Do you have any painted by Anthony S. Waters? I went to animation school with him and try to correspond with him regularly! Hee hee...

I am going thru a STUFF Purge. My super-radioactive gaze leaves nothing untouched...not even the BOOKSHELVES...mwahahaha! (This scares me as previously the books were sacred...now they are scared...wonder what has changed? - Me, obviously.)

If you haven't played in years, does that mean that you have lost interest? One of the best ways to tell the difference between actually having interest in playing vs holding onto the IDEA of being able to play with the cards...would be to actually pull the cards out...perhaps sort them into some sort of organizational something. While you are doing this, pay attention to how you feel. If you feel that maybe you could see yourself playing with these again, keep 'em. If you find yourself looking at them, thinking that your interest in them has waned, sell 'em, donate 'em, get rid of them. I'm sure you could find a something new to take their space!

If you can't make up your mind, revisit this idea in 6 months. Who says you have to decide now???
